This same process taken place underground as well, but in an uncontrolled way. That will explain why only 1% of natural diamonds will come out from mines with fancy colors.
The beautiful colors that we can see in a natural diamond come actually from a white beam of light. We know that the white beam contain the all rainbow colors. When a beam of light strike a polish diamond, some colors will be absorbed in the crystal, some will escape, and mostly one color will come out to our eyes and we see the diamond as colored.
Two main reasons will be the source of this fancy colors:
1. chemical impurities. During the formation of a diamond in
nature ,atoms of foreign chemical elements, mainly boron and nitrogen, replace some carbon atoms, creating color centers in
the diamond lattice, they mill be the reason for the new fancy colors, after stage 2 will happen.
2. Imperfect structure. Sometimes when the diamond is exposed to extremely high pressure in nature, the crystal structure of the diamond is changed in some places. The distance between atoms is decreased, and such diamonds are often get fancy colors.
It is a long way {100-150 mils } that a form diamond will have to cross to the mine were he will be found.
The time table is millions of years in an uncontrolled environment. That is why only 1% of all natural diamonds will be found with fancy colors.
